Covariate Balance as a Quality Indicator for Propensity Score Analysis

نویسندگان

چکیده

Propensity score analysis, such as propensity matching and weighting, is becoming increasingly popular in educational research. When a analysis conducted, examining the covariate balance considered to be crucial justify quality of results. However, it has been pointed out that solely considering how covariates after may not enough for justifying Suitable still yield biased estimates treatment effects. The current study aimed systematically demonstrate this problem by series simulation studies. As result, was revealed good on mean and/or variance does guarantee reduced bias an estimated effect. It also found estimation effect can unbiased some degree, even with lack under specific conditions.

[Propensity score methods for creating covariate balance in observational studies].

Randomization of treatment assignment in experiments generates treatment groups with approximately balanced baseline covariates. However, in observational studies, where treatment assignment is not random, patients in the active treatment and control groups often differ on crucial covariates that are related to outcomes. These covariate imbalances can lead to biased treatment effect estimates. ...

Covariate balancing propensity score

The propensity score plays a central role in a variety of causal inference settings. In particular, matching and weighting methods based on the estimated propensity score have become increasingly common in the analysis of observational data. Despite their popularity and theoretical appeal, the main practical difficulty of these methods is that the propensity score must be estimated. Researchers...

Reporting of covariate selection and balance assessment in propensity score analysis is suboptimal: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES To assess the current practice of propensity score (PS) analysis in the medical literature, particularly the assessment and reporting of balance on confounders. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING A PubMed search identified studies using PS methods from December 2011 through May 2012. For each article included in the review, information was extracted on important aspects of the PS such as the...

Covariate balance in a Bayesian propensity score analysis of beta blocker therapy in heart failure patients

Regression adjustment for the propensity score is a statistical method that reduces confounding from measured variables in observational data. A Bayesian propensity score analysis extends this idea by using simultaneous estimation of the propensity scores and the treatment effect. In this article, we conduct an empirical investigation of the performance of Bayesian propensity scores in the cont...

Covariate Balancing Propensity Score for General Treatment Regimes

Propensity score matching and inverse-probability weighting are popular methods for causal inference in observational studies. Under the assumption of unconfoundedness, these methods enable researchers to estimate causal effects by balancing observed covariates across different treatment values. While their extensions to general treatment regimes exist, a vast majority of applications have been...
